The name of Rumah Bersama, Shared Home came from the following considerations: Indonesia is a multicultural and multireligious country. She is a home for pan-ethnic religions supported by the government, i.e., Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Other pan-ethnic faiths, such as Sikhism, Baha’ism, Judaism, and Taoism, are protected by the constitution to live.
More than 200 ancestral/indigenous religions and streams of spirituality, under the banner of Believers of the Almighty God (Penghayat Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa), lived and prospered in this archipelago. Christianity started with the fundamental theological notion of Oikos. It connotes “house,” “home,” “family,” “sanctuary,” “household,” and other structural dwellings. Rumah Bersama, Shared Home is an enhanced version of Oikos that is a welcoming and safe place for everybody.
Oikos is significantly related to ekklesia, which popularly translates to “church.” Besides the basic meaning of “a called-out congregation,” the original meaning connotes the citizen of a polis (city-state) participation in addressing common problems. Ekklesia relates to a shared home in which each member actively evolves and develops the home.
Rumah Bersama is a database of the nation’s collective memory, as memoria passionis (memory of suffering) because of the interfaith engagements, and memoria felicitas (memory of happiness) because of abundant shared memories in which interfaith initiatives, peaceful engagements, organic harmony, and other rejoices ensued.
